Our medical oncology service, with particular sub-specialisation in melanoma and lung cancers as well as gastrointestinal cancers, provides expert advice, co-ordinates additional services you may require, and arranges any systemic therapy, either tablets or infusions, that may be recommended to you.

If your treatment recommendation is to pursue infusion based systemic therapy (e.g. chemotherapy and/or immunotherapy) then these infusions are expertly managed by nursing staff through Calvary North Adelaide or Calvary Connery Centre infusion suites.

If there is a need for an inpatient stay for medical management, then this is co-ordinated for you through Calvary North Adelaide or Calvary Central Districts hospital.

Associate Professor Rachel Roberts-Thomson

Associate Professor Rachel Roberts-Thomson, MBBS FRACP, is a Medical Oncologist with more than 15 years medical oncology experience with a particular interest in treating patients with melanoma and lung cancer. 


Rachel studied medicine at the University of Adelaide, graduating in 2000. She ventured to Ireland and then settled in Melbourne to complete her physician training and medical oncology specialisation. A fellowship year was spent at Cork University Hospital and further time at Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre.


Rachel returned to Adelaide in 2011 taking up a position at The Queen Elizabeth hospital and in private practice. 


Rachel's interest in particular is in immunotherapeutics. She is a principal investigator on many clinical trials as well as enjoying supervising Medical Oncology Advance Trainees, registrars and students. 


Rachel is affiliated with the University of Adelaide. She is on the South Australian Health Cancer Drug Committee and is an active member of MOGA, ASCO, ESMO, TOGA, MASC Trials. What drives Rachel? Her patients' outcomes and their comfort that they are getting the best care.

Dr Tharani Krishnan

Dr Tharani Krishnan, MBBS FRACP MHLM, is a Medical Oncologist who studied medicine at the University of Adelaide and then completed her physician training and medical oncology specialisation across the metropolitan hospitals of South Australia. 


In 2023, Dr Krishnan commenced a clinical fellowship in gastrointestinal cancers at BC Cancer Vancouver, Canada. She gained a wealth of experience treating patients across the spectrum of gastrointestinal cancers, with particular research interests in circulating tumour DNA (liquid biopsy) and cancer genomics. During this time, Dr Krishnan also completed a Masters of Health and Leadership Management at the University of New South Wales.


Dr Krishnan returned to Adelaide in 2024, and currently holds a public appointment at Flinders Medical Centre and private practice at Cancer Care Adelaide, consulting at Calvary North Adelaide Hospital. She remains actively involved in clinical research, teaching and post-graduate education. Dr Krishnan is a member of MOGA, ASCO, ESMO and AGITG. 


Dr Krishnan welcomes seeing patients with all solid tumour types, and has a particular interest in gastrointestinal cancers, head and neck cancer and breast cancer.


Dr Krishnan is committed to delivering personalised and holistic patient-centered care to achieve the best possible outcome for her patients.
